Please introduce yourself and the band members briefly? My name is Kraen Meier, I´ve been a heavy metal guitarist for about 30 years, and I´ve been playing in different bands over the years. My brother Lukas Meier is the drummer in the band, we also used to play together in our old band Sacrificial. Mads is playing the other guitar, he is from the same area in Jutland were Lukas and I come from, and Asbjørn, vocals and bass is from the actual town that we grew up in. Both Mads and Asbjørn are a bit younger than me and Lukas, but our passion for metal and the fact that we´ve known each other for a long time, comming from the same area, is kind of the glue that holds us together What does the band name mean and how do you get it? The Petulant means the grumpy, one who allways finds faults in life and spends time being openly pissed about it. It´s like us, we are a bit pissed at times. It was just one of many I had in mind for the band. Where and how was the band founded? Well I spend some time in a band that covered Metallica after Sacrificial split up. It was kind of funny playing the songs that were the soundtrack to my teens, but on and on I felt the urge to write music for myself again. I started out by just being me in front of the computer with my guitar and easy drummer. I quickly realized that I had to do something more about it, so I talked to Lukas about forming a band around the material I had written. After some back and forth he was in, and we started out just the two of us. A couple of months later we forced Asbjørn and Mads to join us. That´s basically it. Have you played in other bands before? Yeah, as I mentioned, I played and wrote most of the music in Sacrificial. I also ended up playing in Iniquity when I moved to Copenhagen in the early 2000´s. Then for a while I played in Mugshot, a danish hardcore like outfit. I´m also a part of Hells Domain, and cowrote a couple of songs for the new album, that will hopefully be finnished this year. I´ve played a couple of shows for Atromkraft from the UK, and I´ve recently become live guitarist for the legendary Danish band Artillery. Besides that, I have joined an untill further notice, secret band in Jönköping in Sweden Was it hard to find suitable band members who fit musically and humanely with the band? Like I said before, we all come from a small area in Jutland in Denmark, so we kind of knew each other before we started playing together. The only thing that was difficult, was persuading Mads and Asbjørn to join us, but it eventually clicked. What does the band name mean? Like I mentioned before it means grumpy, sour, ill willed.   What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them ? The lyrics revolve around war, death, and destruction, both on a global scale, and on a personal level. I wrote the first lyrics, but when Asbjørn joined and started singing, it was kind of natural that he took over writing most of the lyrics. Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard a sound from you? I am very inspired by the Bay area thrash metal bands of the eighties and Slayer, but also some of the early florida bands such as Malevolent Creation and Morbid Angel. Newer inspirations would be Marduk, Aura Noir, generally a bit more black. Our music is a surgical cold fist that wants to mangle you, if I had to put it into a few words. We like a little technical stuff here and there, but generally we go for simple, brutal and often fast songs. Why should people listen to our music? They schould listen to it for the fun and enjoyment of it. Sit back, fasten your seat belt, have a beer and bang your head! How long did the work on your debut album Dictum from the year 2017 last? Well it´s a collection of songs that were written between 2014 and 2016. Basically we were writing stuff for live shows, so when the oportunity to record an album arose, we just went for it. Are you already working on new songs? Yes I have basic ideas for more or less a whole new album, but I want us to work on the songs together, so we have like 5 new songs that are more or less finished by now.   You've been under contract with Mighty Music. How does the cooperation work and what do you expect from the cooperation? Well what we get is a lot of exposure that we wouldn´t be able to get ourselves. Mighty have been using their network to get our name out and around. The cooporation has been working fine I think. There hasn´t been any nasty surprises in store for us.   What was your first concert as a fan? and what memory do you have of it? I think it was Slayer and Candlemass in Copenhagen on the South of heaven tour in `88. I was living in Jutland back then and the trip to Copenhagen was like a journey by train and boat that took several hours. There might have been some smaller shows in Jutland before that, but that was the first big one.   Do you think that the possibility exists that you will play live in Europe? If anyone wants to see us out there, they are more than welcome to get in touch with us. We´d really like to go, but we don´t really have a lot of contacts right now.   What were your live highlights and with which bands did you play? I don´t know, there´s a lot of funny memories from a lot of shows. I think maybe the highlight might have been playing the Roskilde festival with Sacrificial back in 1994. Have already resulted in friendship ? I´ve got some friends from the underground in Sweden and Denmark that I´m still seing and writing with in messenger and stuff. But I haven´t really been that good at finding all my old contacts in the social media like facebook and stuff I´m sorry to say. If you'd like to play live and if you would like to ? I love playing live, but I´m just very bad at getting live jobs for my band...I´m actually a complete idiot at getting live jobs for The Petulant. With what do you earn your money except with the music? I´m just doing odd jobs now and then. I´ve never really found a job that I liked. How important are social media for you as a band? For me personally they are not important, but for the band it´s obviously important to be there and have a pressence in the social media.   What would you (her) want to achieve with the band? I would love to get a good fanbase both nationally and internationally. But right now, we´re like struggling just to get a support show anywhere, so it´s a far way off right now.   You have been active as a musician in the Denmark metal scene for over 20 years. What has changed in your opinion the last years?   The major change I´ve seen is that bands have a more business like attitude towards being in a band. I´ve seen bands that almost didn´t know one song, that had a ready merch line for sale. In general I think that we were a little to laid back in the 90´ies (In Sacrificial)regarding merch and all that stuff. We thought the music would basically carry itself. So a more proffesional approach isn´t at all bad I think.   What do you think about the Denmark metal scene in general? There´s some good bands and there are some not so good bands, like anywhere else. If I compare it to Sweden, I think the swedes are a lot better at supporting each other than we are in Denmark. The audience also seems more into music in Sweden than in Denmark. Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? Check out Orm, Phrenelith, Afsky, Undergang and Xenoblight to name a few. There´s a lot of bands in Denmark and a lot of different ways to go about playing metal PERSONAL QUESTIONS ! Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? I grew up in Ribe in Jutland. I guess my childhood was pretty average, growing up in a small town. How was your school time you were rather the good student or the break clown ? I was pretty good at school, but I hated being there. I never got used to the idea of having to get up to go to this prison like thing to learn stuff. How did your parents react when you started making metal music? did they support you and how do you feel about your music today? They have always been very supportive from the earliest beginnings. My father, who isn´t among us any longer, was an elektric mechanik, so he helped me out when I had trouble with any of my gear. My mother is still very supportive and loves that Lukas and I are into music. Would you be successful in making music as a musician? I don´t get the question I´m affraid....Succesful like making a lot of money? No. But succesful like playing music I love and also playing with my teenage heroes (Artillery) Yes. Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? I live in Copenhagen and I like it here, but I´m not addicted to the hustle and bustle like you say. I like being able to go out to shows, that we have quite a lot of here in Copenhagen, but on a daily basis I would be just as happy out in the countryside. Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? I´m more of a spectator, but I´m generally not a sport fanatic.   When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for you ? I know how to cook What does your environment tell you about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues) ?   The people I keep around me are the people that want me the way I am. I don´t wanna be around people that want me to be something that I am not. How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere?   Well, that´s just the way it goes, when everybody all of a sudden has a voice, like social media, and want to be heard. I think a lot of the hatred that´s being stated out there is being stated without a thought about consequence, or the dammage it can do to the one that is targeted. What do you think about the internet in general? a blessing or a curse?   I think the internet in general is a blessing, as long as we keep in mind that we need to think for ourselves also. But if people start making up their own reality, like on facebook for instance, I think that it`s gonna be a curse in the long run. We need to remember that it´s not all that you read on the internet that´s real or true. Remember to question things every now and then   What would you personally like to do in your life? I would love to be able to sustain my livelyhood just by playing and writing music. Otherwise I´m a pretty happy camper the way my life´s turned out.   Which question would you like to have answered and why? ????? Denmark Smallest country in Scandinavia   Austria Country south of Germany. Got some beautiful landscapes in the Alps. Home of the Strudel   Smørrebrød Danish open sandwich, most often served on rhy bread.   Carlsberg Well it´s a beer isn´t it? ;-)   Slayer or Metallica Can´t really say one or the other. Love what both bands did in the eighties. Still love some af what Slayer do, not that much Metallica.   Channel Zero A fine Belgian thrash band I think. We (Sacrificial)opened for them when they played with Exhorder in Esbjerg in 1992.   Exodus or Testament Exodus is my all time fave band. I love the chemistry between Tom Huntings´drums and Gary Holds´riffs Testament is a freat band too though!   Family No, I´ve got a beautiful norwegian girlfriend whom I´m living with.   Movie or Series Don´t really mind. Well, gotta be movie, I usually get tired of a series if it´s to long   Your top 10 all time album faves In no particular order, just of the top of my head as I remember it right now: Fabolous disaster, Exodus The Law, Exhorder Darkness descends. Dark angel Persecution mania, Sodom Extreme aggresion, Kreator Master of puppets, Metallica Kill ém all, Metallica Reign in blood, Slayer The legacy, Testament Forbidden evil, Forbidden   your top 5 albums in time   ! The best albums of the later years that I can come to think of would be: Frontschwein, Marduk Mark of the necrogram, Necrophobic The children of the night, Tribulation Trident wolf eclipse, Watain Out to die, Aura noir The closing word is yours? Well first and foremost, thank you for this interview and your time. I hope some of you that read it will check out The Petulant and maybe follow us in our future efforts. We´re still writing stuff for our next release and it´s turning out a bit darker than our debut album. Do also feel free to book us for festivals or shows
