IN YOUR I
HATE ME METAL
FROM
FRANCE
Projekt Questions
answer by Ricardo
Please introduce yourself and the Project members briefly?
Hi! My name’s Ricardo and I’m In Your I’s guitar player and main and
sole composer. Currently there are no other members.
What does the Project name mean and how did you get it?
The project name, In Your I, comes from the song In Your Eyes,
published on my first album « Tales of Dark and Death ». It’s one of
my favorite songs. For that album I wrote lyrics, even though I’m not
able to sing ! The song is a sort of dark version of the Beauty and the
Beast tale, and at the end the Beast reveals his true nature and kills the
Beauty. The lyrics ends by : « In your eyes, see my smile, as you die ».
So I had this image of the Beast watching himself in Beauty’s dying
eyes. That’s from where comes the pun with the eye = I.
Where and how was the Project founded?
Since I’m living in France near Paris, I guess that will be the where !
For the how, initially I wanted to create my own metal band. I thought
that I needed some kind of « business card ». So I decided to record
several demos and to publish them, and that’s how the project started.
Have you played in other Projects before?
I played guitar during for 4 years in the Bruno Karnel project. And early
this year I joined a symphonic metal band called Aerial Utopia as
rhythm guitarist.
Was it hard to find suitable Project members who fit musically and
humanely with the Project?
In a sens yes, that’s why there is no In Your I band. After « Tales » was
released, I published several announcements to create the band. Only
a singer, Marco, replied back. I asked a friend of mine, Cyrille a bass
player, to join in also. Besides them, I could never find a drummer or a
guitar solo. We did some rehearsals for a while, but Marco had to quit.
So I decided to stop the band side of the project and to keep it as a solo
project.
What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them ?
I only wrote lyrics for « Tales ». It’s dark fantasy mainly. One of them
was inspired by Lovecraft’s « The Shadow over Innsmouth », which is
one of my favorite stories from the Cthulhu myth. For « Dark Side » it’s
only instrumentals.
Which Bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to
someone who has never heard a sound from you?
All the bands that I like are an inspiration for me. But should I select
one, I would choose Iron Maiden. They are the first metal band I
listened to, and the one that pushed me to start playing guitar. But my
style comes from Metallica. In fact I learned to play guitar with two
songs : Guns n’ Roses « Don’t Cry » and Metallica « Fade to Black ».
Regarding my sound, I usually only use a single word to describe it :
METAL ! Then if the person I’m talking to doesn’t start running away,
then I will use Metallica and Slayer to describe my music, but with
some other influences and not only from metal.
Will a project stay in your i or can it become a band?
So far it will remain a solo and side project. Aerial Utopia is currently
the main band were I’m playing, so they have my priority. But who
knows, maybe in the future I will meet people interested in joining me
and try again to recreate a band.
What was your first concert as a fan and what memory do you have of
it?
Precisely, it was in 1995, november 16, to see Iron Maiden during the X
Factor tour (which by the way is one of my favorite albums). I was 21
(yeah, Im’ that old, I was born in 74 !). And my best memory of that
concert was the first act by My Dying Bride. There wasn’t a lot of
people listening to them, but I was thrilled. The sound, the style, the
mood, it was great. And I became a huge Doom metal fan.
What were your live highlights and with which Bands did you play?
A concert with Bruno Karnel for the « Fête de la musique », which
happens every year in France on june 21st. It’s one of my best
memories because that day I really felt how good it was to play in a
band. All of us playing for the same purpose, with a good vibe and the
good connection between all the musicians.
Which Band would you like to play live with and why?
There are a lot of them, but I would choose Moonspell. Because I love
what they do, they are portuguese like me, and we are from the same
generation. Besides, they only have one guitar player, so I could apply
for the second one !
Have already resulted in friendship ?
With people I have played with, yes.
With what do you earn your money except with the music?
I’m a logistics instructor for an airline company maintenance
department.
How important are social media for you as a Project?
Through Facebook I’m able to present my music and publish some
announcements. And it helps to get in touch with people that like what I
do.
What would you (her) want to achieve with the Project?
In my dreams, be able to play my music around the world ! In reality,
I’m already happy with what I’ve achieved some far. Getting in touch
through my music with people like you, people that I’ve never met
before but that enjoy listening to what I play.
Maybe you can recommend some Bands from your area?
To be honest, I’m not really involved in the local metal scene. But I can
give you some names like Bruno Karnel, even though he doesn’t play
metal he is a metal fan and you can find some influences on his style.
Wyld, the drummer is a friend, and they play an heavy rock metal.
Mastercrow, a technical death metal band. And Aerial Utopia,
symphonic metal, with a demo is available in Soundcloud.
PERSONAL QUESTIONS !
Where did you grow up and how was your childhood?
I was born in France, but I lived in Portugal from 6 to 15 years old. Then
I went back to France where I’m still living today. My childhood was
cool, even though there are some dark spots, which may have lead me
to metal music !
How was your school time you were rather the good student or the
break clown ?
Neither of them ! I was rather an average kid at school, I wasn’t bad
but I wasn’t exceptional either.
How did your parents react when you started making metal music? did
they support you and how do you feel about your music today?
My mother calls it the crazy people music ! My father is more open
minded, and he appreciates some AC/DC, Maiden or even the french
metal band Trust. But they were ok with it. They were the ones that
bought me my first guitar. It started as a secondary activity, so there
was no need for a support and they were not preoccupied that I could
stop school to start a metal player career ! Personally I’m cool with it.
For a long time I thought that I didn’t have the skills for it. Today I’ve
reached a moment in my life where I don’t ask myself any longer those
kind of questions. I play what I want to play, the way I want. If people
like that’s great, if people don’t no problem, move on.
Would you be successful in making music as a musician?
I guess will never know. Should I have a band, I would have tried to go
further than what I’m doing now with In Your I. But today there are so
many bands, I think it’s really hard to stand out from the crowd if
you’re not in at 200% !
Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? or
rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature?
I live in the suburbs of Paris, and to be honest I hate it ! Mainly because
transportation is very complicated. For a simple single trip it’s almost
an odyssey ! But I admit that there are also some advantages. However
if I had the chance to choose, I’d rather take the peace and relaxation
choice. But I’m more coast and sea, than forest and mountain.
Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive
spectator?
I’ve been practicing Tai Chi for several years now, on two different
styles Chen (martial) and Yang (more passive). I’ve also practiced
some Krav Maga in the past. Now I’m into golf !
When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for
you ?
I was raised by my grandmother who was a cook, so I’ve learned
enough to cook for myself. But my wife handles it very well ! For sure
were are not into industrial junk food. We never go to a McDonalds
because I can cook my own hamburger !
What does your environment tell you about your passion for metal
(friends / family / colleagues) ?
When you have a a passion for metal people always see you as a weird
person ! Those who know me are ok with it, but many of them cannot
listen to what I play ! But it’s ok as long as they accept my tastes and
try not to convince me that metal is evil !!!!
How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have
to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and
everywhere?
I appreciate a lot stupid people, they help me to see how intelligent and
smart I can be ! As for criticizing in anonymity, if they really want to
impress with their arguments, they should give the example. I know the
time and work it takes to write music and record it. And the courage it
takes to publish it on the internet for all the world to listen, or even play
it live. If someone doesn’t like it, instead of criticizing it, they should
rather show what they are able to do. For sure those who like
anonymity won’t show up. There are a lot of things that I don’t like, but
I respect the work that people put onto it.
What do you think about the internet in general? a blessing or a curse?
I’d rather see the good side of it. Without the internet I wouldn’t be
here answering your questions. And you wouldn’t listen to my music.
For me the internet is a good way to share things, but like every kind of
social relation, there are rules to follow. And things go bad when you
don’t follow them. So problems with the internet come people who
used it wrongly.
What would you personally like to do in your life?
Write and play music ! If I could spend my life only doing that, it would
be great.
Which question would you like to have answered and why?
This interview is very well done, with a lot of different and interesting
questions. Maybe questions about my musical style, my different
influences, and what I see for the future of this project. Also about my
gear and writing style.
France
The place where I was born and where I live !
Austria
Never been there, but my wife would like to visit Vienna.
Soccer
Not a fan, I don’t really care. However I do watch sometimes games
during the world cup or the euro
Metallica or Iron Maiden
Can’t choose, both are a big influence
Slayer or Megadeth
Again ?! I hate you, damn !!! Slayer hit me so hard the first time I
listened to them, that I knew I wanted to play as fast as I could ! And
Megadeth’s writing is so great, that I consider them better than
Metallica. If only Mustaine had moved on instead of being so focused
on Metallica all those years, I think that Megadeth would have been the
number one thrash metal band.
Baguettes
You mean the bread ? Not a fan
Eiffel tower
It’s metal !!! People hated it when it was built, but it’s still there
Beer or Coca Cola
BEER !!!! Definitely. But Coca Cola is great to clean up metal parts
Family
A huge support, and my wife is my number one fan ! And my roadie
also !!
Drugs
What for ?
Tour de France
The landscape is nice
Your top 10 all Time Fave
Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Cradle Of Filth, Moonspell,
Orphaned Land, Korn, Paradise Lost. That makes 9. For the last one it
won’t be a band, but a man : Max Cavalera. I love what he does, and
have profound respect for the man and his work. And I have a Warlock
because of him !
Five Albums in moment !
Right now, Jonathan Davis « Black Labyrinth », Moonspell « 1755 »,
for the most recent ones. I will also add Megadeth « Killing is my
Business » and Maiden « The X Factor ». And of course, In Your I «
Dark Side of My Mind » !
The closing word is yours?
Thank you for your support. I’m only doing this for the fun of it, so it’s
really a pleasure to meet people that enjoy my music. Stay tuned as I
hope to release a new album some time soon. Until then have fun,
enjoy life, don’t miss any occasion to be happy and be METAL !
