GUMO MANIACS The child of SODOM and SEPULTURA  The Band Question   Answer by DANIEL „GUMO“ REIß
Please introduce yourself and the band members briefly? We are GumoManiacs from Germany and we play Thrash Metal. Our current members are Hubi Hofmann on  bass, Air Hofmann on drums and myself Daniel „Gumo“ Reiß on guitars and vocals What does the band name mean and how do you get it? Gumo“ ist my nickname and that's why the band is called GumoManiacs. I got it during my apprenticeship... Where and how was the band founded? I started as an one project with a drum-computer in 2007 in Regensburg, South Germany. After the first Demo I wanted to make a real band and started searching members. Have you played in other bands before? I played in Thargos for 11 years. During that time I also recorded an album with Teemu Kautonen's Wizzard from Finnland You played at Wizzard do you still have contact with the musicians? Only with „CY“, the drummer who also was the drummer of Thargos, but we don't talk very often. One day at a GumoManiacs show I was asked if we could play a Wizzard show at an festival, but I don't see any change of that happening. I don't know where Teemu is and not everyone from back then is still making music. How did you come to your nickname gumo? It happened during my apprenticeship to become a sound engineer and somehow I never ever good rid of it from then on. It means soemthing like „good man“ or so...don't ask me...^^ What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them ? I am writing pretty much all the lyrics, or maybe 98 percent of them. The subjects are very different from each other some time. It's about the state of the mind and heart but also about biographic stuff of historic people that really existed and even new stories about whatever comes my way from Science Fiction to Horror and so on and so on... Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to someone who has never  heard a sound from you? Easiest way would be to say “we play Thrash Metal”. I guess bands like Slayer or Sodom were the most important but even a song on the radio can evoke new ideas in my head Well, why should people listen to our music? They should not. They can listen to whatever they want and if they are interested in Classic Thrash Metal or German Thrash Metal I guess they might like GumoManiacs as well and could check it out. :-) Priest of lucifer is now ten years old and you take the album again! Why are you doing this? We don't have much CDs anymore and the Vinyl is completely sold out at our bandcamp page so we not just wanted to reprint and repress it but try to see how it feels to make a remake, something we did not do up to now. Even though „Priest of Lucifer“ is quite appreciated by our small but very nice group of listeners we ourselves never liked it that much. So this time we did it in a way that also we ourselves can like it but we also tried to keep the original spirit alive. That was the goal. Your last album was released in 2017 as a double album! Do we have to wait longer for new songs? or are you already working on new songs? The next album is already almost finnished. Only vocals are missing, but it might still take some time until we are ready to release it. I woud say end of 2019 is realistic. Releasing records is expensive and I need to make plans first. You played a tour in mexico in 2009 and 2011! how did it happen who invited you how the tour went and what were your impressions of mexico? I made a MySpace contact with Blower Records form Mexico who released our first 2 albums and invited us. The people over there really go crazy at Heavy Metal shows, much more crazy than here in Germany. There is much more energy I would say. What were your live highlights and with which bands did you play? There was so many...too many to mention, but the highlight was clearly opening for Sepultura        for me! Have already resulted in friendship ? German Thrash Metal band Antipeewee are good friends of ours!                                                 They also live very near where we live! With what do you earn your money except with the music? I am a sound engineer. How important are social media for you as a band? They are very important but I don't like it too much. It's like a homework you have to do, not something you really enjoy. At least that's my personal feeling about it. What would you (her) want to achieve with the band? There is no goal. All I want to do is to express myself and search my inner self and see what creative powers I can find within myself to also learn more about myself. Do you also see a problem with the German festivals that it will be difficult to find new headliners?  Or is it your own fault as there is no chance for young bands? There will always be Headliners but whenever the old classics are gone one day the Heavy metal music is going  to change a lot I think. Let's see what happens... What do you think about the metal scene in germany in general? This question is difficult since my best friends are all outside of metal which means I am not too deep into the scene. I wish I could say something about this, but since I am a sound engineer I DO NOT like to go to conerts and loud meetings in my free time. Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? Antipeewee! The personal questions ! Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? I grew up in Regensburg, South Germany and my childhood was quite good thanks to my parents!  I had great parents! How was your school time you were rather the good student or the break clown ? I think I was a mix between the clown and the boring person but somehow I belonged to the „cool guys“ in the end. How did your parents react when you started making metal music did they support you and how do you feel about your music today? They were proud but at the same time they wished I would make a music that was more „beautiful“. Good thing is that there never were any problems with being a Heavy Metal guy with my parents. They always supported me! Would you be successful in making music as a musician? I am not making a lot of money, so I guess I am not successful but on the other hand I am making exactly the albums I would listen to as a fan and I really DO like to listen to them. To me that's enough of success. Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? I like to have quiet moments! As long as there is a nice little park or place where I can chill out and meditate a bit even the Big City can be ok. Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? I am a passive spectator of USA Basketball! When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for you ? I can not cook a lot but I try to eat as healthy as I can. Sometimes I spend a lot of money for that purpose. What does your environment tell you about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues) Most of my friends are NOT into Heavy Metal but they totally respect my music and my interesst in Thrash Metal.   I would say I have really good friends that I could consider TRUE friends that do not judge anyone. How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere? I ignore them. They are boring... What do you think about the internet in general? a blessing or a curse? It depends how to use or abuse it. It can be both for sure and it depends what we make out of it and how we decide to use it in our lives! What would you personally like to do in your life? Live a life without worry and without fear and find inner peace. I am working on that and I can say that I feel much more calm in comparison how I felt 5 years ago. I think you are a basketball fan? how did that happen and what is your favorite club? It happened in 1992 when the USA Dream Team won the Olympics in Barcelona. I watched Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls frequently from then on and became a Los Angeles Lakers fan at the end of the 90s Which music or bands you can not hear at all There was many but I learned to not let music make me angry anymore. Maybe I got used to so many different kinds of music by being a sound engineer and having to listen to them and make them sound as good as I can. Which question would you like to have answered and why? I used to ask myself what the sense of life is, but I feel like I am finding answers little by little. The Metal Rap Austria Beautiful!
